The holidays are done. January is in full swing. The days are gray. Snow is on the ground. The steps are icy. In some “mental health” circles, this is the season of the “post-holiday blues”
So it is vitally important that I fill my mind with the truth of God’s Word. I need the “sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:17) to defeat Satan’s lies and my own heart’s deceit.
This month I have been reading the “Harmony of the Gospels” which is the life of Jesus in chronological order, blending all four of the gospels in one narrative. Today I was struck by Jesus’ invitations. Invitations to his disciples. Invitations to people. Invitations to me.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28,29
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ ” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39
I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:9, 10
Are you tired, bone-tired? Are you thirsty, chapped-lips feeling parched begging for water? Are you at a crossroads, wondering what to do, where to go, whether or not to just “give it all up and be done?” Jesus’ invitation is there. He says, “come to Me.” He will satisfy. He will give rest. He will be enough.
