Plea for Grace September 14, 2022

Matthew 12:33-37 ESV -
33 "Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit.
34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.
36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak,
37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
Psalm 19:12-14 ESV -
12 Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great transgression.
14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
Matthew 6:7-8 ESV -
7 "And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

God has given us language, and we can use language to praise Him or to please ourselves. But as we saw yesterday, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. We can only speak the words that we think people want to hear for so long. God knows our hearts. Reading and studying God’s Word as a Christian (as one who has trusted in Jesus’ death and resurrection to pay the debt of my sin) is not just to learn the right words to say to look good to others, or to earn any acceptance with God. I want God to change my heart. As I read His Word and learn who God is and how He wants me to live, He changes me. He shows me where I have been believing lies so I can repent and believe the truth.

Father, like the psalmist I want my words and my thoughts to be acceptable to You, not because they will earn me favor or “make you like me better” but because You are a holy and righteous God and You are deserving of all my praise. I want my motives as well as my words to be pleasing to You because obedience to Your Word is how I want to live.
